Green Bikes

Hi Friends,

I work at a non-profit organization in East Palo Alto called Collective Roots. This year we have 6 interns working as part of a Green Jobs initiative.  They are learning about the food system, youth leadership, and garden based education. As part of the internship they are required to commute 5-7 miles to work. Instead of driving we wanted them to bicycle as part of their green internship. We have two bike donated, but will need to purchase 4 more.

I'm wondering if you or someone you know has a bike that they want to find a good home for. We need 4 commuter bicycles for our interns. The interns heights are 5.5, 5.9, 5.9, 5.7, 5.11, and 5.11. If you have a bicycle that fits any combination of these 6 heights we can make it work.

I would love to provide safe sturdy bicycles for our interns that will last more than a year, otherwise we might have to buy the bikes from "gasp," Walmart. I need to figure this out ASAP to get it approved by our leadership. Please let me know if you have any ideas soon. Thanks for your loving support. The revolution begins with the pedal not the pump.

Best,

Matt Harnack

Methyl-mercury Movie

Last Wednesday I taught a group of 23 teacher from the Palo Alto Unified School District how to effectively use video in the classroom. Because I always try to tie everything I do back to the environment, I prepared a stop motion animation exercise that shows how bio-magnification happens in the food chain. One group completed the exercise in less than an hour and uploaded their animation to Youtube before lunch was over. Here's what they came up with. I'm so proud! I adapted the exercise from a new Klutz book, Tricky Video that my friend Nick cowrote. Thanks Nick!

Eco-Flix:Friday:April 23rd: 7:30pm: Lucie Stern Center:FREE

I know you all have many eco-events on your plate as Earth Day approaches, but make sure you mark your calendar for this one. I will be playing several of my films at the Lucie Stern Community Center this Friday at 7:30pm. Former Mayor Peter Drekmeier will be hosting a Q&A after the screening. Come check out Used Matters, a film that won the "Best Environmental Award" at the Marin County Fair last year and Pie From Scratch, a film about a farm in Pescadero that connects agriculture to the inner city. I'll also be playing the acclaimed music video "Double Panes" and of course, my thesis, a Fossil Fuel Free Film. Come celebrate Earth Day by enjoying some Eco-Flix. There will be fresh local organic popcorn and lemonade courtesy of the filmmaker. I hope to see you there.

Winner of the Greenlight Film Fest!

Big News! Fossil Fuel Free Film won the open category at the Greenlight Film Festival. I got a cash prize and an awesome reused basketball trophy. I want to thank everyone who put the festival together at the Mid-peninsula Media Center, especially Becca Fisher and Annie Folger. It was a wonderful night of youth films and a G rated version of my film. I would ordinarily give 4f a PG or PG-13 rating for mild language and adult themes. You can see the full version of the film the Friday April 23rd at 7:30 PM at the Lucie Stern Community Center along with my other Eco-Flix. javascript:void(0)

F4 playing at the Green Lifestyle Film Festival March 20

Good news! Fossil Fuel Free Film is playing at the Green Lifestyle Film Festival. My film plays at the James Bridges Theater at UCLA on Saturday March 20th. The bad news is that my film plays at 8:10 in the morning. Not exactly prime-time, but hey, I gotta start somewhere.
